It is possible that the movie Dune Messiah could be the next film for director Denis Villeneuve.
Director Denis Villeneuve is ready to return to Arrakis. For years now, the driving force behind Dune Part One and Part Two has said he wants to make a third film, Dune: The Messiah but needed to take a break first. Well, after months of Warner Bros. setting a mysterious release date for their next film in December 2026, the director has changed his tune.
“I guess I thought that after Part Two I would take a break, go back into the woods and stay there for a while to recover. But the woods didn’t suit me really well, and I’ll be back behind the camera faster than I thought. Villeneuve told the official release date in a new interview: “But that’s all I can say.”
He’s been working on the script for Dune: The Messiah, after 12 years of Part Two events, for a while now and revealed that it’s still in the process. He said: “I’m in the writing zone now.” However, he also clarified that he sees Dune Part One and Part Two as a final movie and that The Messiah will be different.
“Just like Herbert did with Dune The Messiah,” Villeneuve said, “I think it would be a great idea to do something completely different.” “The story takes place approximately 12 years after where the characters left off in the end of Part Two. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say even though it’s the same world, it’s a new film with new circumstances.
While hesitant to say more, he confirmed that he expects the return of the main characters who are still present: Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia, Paul’s sister. Villeneuve said: “They need to come back.” “They’re with the main actors when it happens. And more worms. What can I say?”
Depending on Villeneuve’s dedication to Dune: The Messiah, audiences can also expect the return of characters played by Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and even Jason Momoa, a topic Chalamet discussed a few years ago.
Villeneuve did not confirm the expected date for filming or release of the film to Deadline, although he seems to be aware of it. Something is going to happen in 2026. This, once again, is the timeline expected by Warner Bros. currently and will require the director to start at some point in the new year. While we feel towards Villeneuve that he won’t get a break from Dune, you have to strike when the spice is hot. We can’t wait.
