Explanation of The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom – Part 2 and Final
Continuing our article:
Null and the Static World
Throughout the story of Echoes of Wisdom, Zelda, Link, and Tri manage to stop Null from achieving his goal of engulfing Hyrule and returning it to a state of void. Although we only see glimpses of this void through recovered footage from the goddesses, we witness Null’s attempt in the static world.
The static world is what lies on the other side of the rifts torn by Null across Hyrule. This distorted world has a background resembling emptiness, but it is made up of fragmented remnants of the portion of Hyrule torn by Null.
For example, if you enter the static world through a rift passing through some ruins in the Gerudo Desert, you will find these ruins and their inhabitants floating around this part of the static world. Most people swallowed in the rifts of the static world turn into petrified statues within this realm.
Tri informs Zelda that these parts of the static world are essentially temporary, and everything inside them will eventually fade away and become part of the void, including the people.
Note:
Zelda and Link are the only two characters capable of existing in the static world without turning into statues, likely due to their connection to the Triforce. Zelda represents the Triforce of Wisdom, and Link represents the Triforce of Courage.
The static world is Null’s world, and is likely closer to the bottom side of Hyrule where Null is confined, thus serving as an extension of his astounding power and abilities. Null can create rifts across reality to shatter and devour lands, objects, and living creatures. It is difficult to fathom what Null can do now after learning to face the confinement of the goddesses.
However, Null realizes that he needs the core energy of the Triforce to engulf the world entirely, so he is not strong enough to complete his mission alone, and instead needs to manipulate the Triforce, which is an extension of the goddesses’ power.
If the Tri allied with Zelda had not been able to escape confinement in the static world like the rest of the Tris, Hyrule could have faced complete destruction, and the goddesses may have had to intervene in a more dramatic divine manner.
Tip:
Divine intervention is not necessarily the best scenario in Zelda’s history, with the most impactful example being the beginning of the Missing Hero timeline branch, where Hyrule was engulfed in water, leading to the events of The Wind Waker.
Will Null appear in any other Zelda games?
Null was first introduced and named in Echoes of Wisdom, and prior to the release of the first standalone Zelda adventure, the identity and place of Null in the Zelda world were unknown. However, now that we know about Null, has he appeared before in other games and we were unaware of it?
Null, Demise, and the Triforce
At the end of Echoes of Wisdom, Null is able to easily use the Triforce of Power. Although not explicitly mentioned as the Triforce of Power, using the process of elimination, and since Link and Zelda receive their respective thirds of the Triforce, Null is left with the Triforce of Power.
In Zelda’s history, the cycle of conflict embodied between the Triforce of Power and the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom is believed to have started with the battle between Link and Demise during the events of Skyward Sword. After his defeat, Demise is said to be reborn across time, and due to the similarities between them, this recurring birth is believed to be the various incarnations of Ganon encountered throughout Zelda’s history.
