Here’s how to download the annual update (24H2) for Windows 11 after its release.
Microsoft has introduced the 2024 update for Windows 11, also known as 24H2 (the second half of 2024 update) today, making it the third annual update for Windows 11 since its launch in June 2021. Unlike previous annual updates, the 24H2 update prioritizes +Copilot devices, offering its users many features supported by artificial intelligence, while it has very few benefits for regular devices running on Intel and AMD processors. obtaining it on those devices now requires specific specifications that may complicate things for older devices. Anyway, you can review our previous post where we discussed the key features of this update, and from the following lines, we will go over the official methods available to update Windows 11 now to version 24H2.
The 24H2 update is indeed an annual update, but like any other update released by Microsoft for Windows 11 and any other Windows version, it is downloaded through the main method, which is through the Windows Update page in settings. So, if you are looking for the fastest way to download the 2024 update, it will be through manually checking for updates instead of waiting for a notification from Microsoft that a new update is available for your device.
However, despite the fact that the update was officially released today, it gradually reaches users using an approach that Microsoft calls “Staged Rollout,” where artificial intelligence and remote analysis data are used to gradually roll out the 24H2 version to everyone starting today and over the coming days and weeks. In general, all you have to do is go to the Windows Update page in the Settings app and click on Check for updates, after which the update should appear under the title [Windows 11, version 24H2]. Press Download & install to start the download and installation process, prompting you to restart your computer to complete the update.
If the update does not reach your device in this way, then in this case you have two options: the first is to activate the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option and then check for the availability of the update again, or download it forcibly through the other methods we will discuss in the following lines.
Using the Installation Assistant tool
While the main and recommended method from Microsoft to update Windows 11 to version 24H2 is through the Windows Update page, the company also provides various methods for updating even on unsupported devices. Among these methods is relying on the Installation Assistant tool to download the update files from Microsoft servers directly, but away from the Windows Update service. All you need to do is visit the following link through any browser (preferably Edge) on your computer:
Now you will see the Windows 11 download page, which contains 3 different options, the first of which is updating the version using the Installation Assistant tool, which is the ideal method for those who want to get the 2024 update smoothly as if it were through the Windows Update service, where the new update is installed in the shortest time possible without your intervention or deletion of any data.
After installing and running the Installation Assistant tool on your device, all you have to do is agree to the terms and usage licenses by clicking on Accept and install, and immediately, without any preamble, the tool will begin downloading the latest version of Windows 11 supported by the 24H2 update, which is the first stage, followed by the device preparation stage and saving a copy of the current Windows 11 version to refer to later if desired, then the last stage, which is installing the update. Once the three stages are completed, the tool allows you 30 minutes before automatically restarting to complete the update successfully.
Using the Media Creation Tool
There is also a Media Creation Tool from Microsoft that helps Windows 11 users who are looking to upgrade their devices to the latest available version of the system or burn the system to a USB flash drive or DVD, or even download the ISO file independently and install Windows 11 version 24H2 on another device or even install it as a virtual system through VirtualBox / Hyper-V. Therefore, you can also use this tool to get the 24H2 update on your computer easily.
All you have to do is download the tool from the Microsoft website (the link is attached above) and then run it and choose Upgrade this PC now and click Next to continue. At this stage, the tool will download the latest version of Windows 11 and install it automatically without losing any important data or your favorite programs. But if you prefer to download the latest version and burn it to a USB flash drive for a clean installation on the same device or install Windows 11 on another device, select Create installation media and follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the download and burning process automatically.
Downloading the Windows 11 Version 24H2 ISO file
The methods mentioned above allow you to download the new update immediately and upgrade from Windows 11 version 23H2 to 24H2. However, if you want to get the ISO file for the new version through a direct link and download it using external download programs like IDM, then burn it to a USB flash drive manually using Rufus, so that you can perform a clean installation of Windows 11 on your device or any of your other devices, that is also possible.
If you go to the Windows 11 download page (the link is attached above), you will find the last option is to download the ISO directly. All you have to do here is select “Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO for x64 devices)” from the dropdown menu and click Download Now, then select the system language, and finally you will get the download button. Note that the file size exceeds 5 gigabytes, so depending on your internet speed, the download process may take some time. Of course, this method will require extra steps from you like burning the version to a flash drive or DVD, then adjusting the BIOS settings and going through the usual Windows installation steps, followed by installing your drivers and programs. In any case, you will end up with the latest version of Windows 11 in the end.
