Can toothpaste really remove scratches from phone screens? Xiaomi releases new video to clarify the idea

Often used as a home remedy to remove scratches from a phone screen, or a quick trick to clean the screen. Well, it seems to be a lie. Using toothpaste on your phone screen does absolutely nothing.

The official person responsible for debunking this myth was Xiaomi. Through a YouTube short, they posted a video demonstrating what happens if you use toothpaste on a screen full of scratches. And the answer is disappointing: it has no effect at all.

The origin of this myth is uncertain, but since it started spreading as a screen cleaning method, there have been hundreds of videos recommending the same thing.

The logical basis behind toothpaste as a scratch remover is its ability to fill in the gaps left by scratches. Additionally, other reasons suggest that the abrasive effect of toothpaste removes the top layer of the screen, smoothes it, and eliminates light scratches, but this is not true.

According to Xiaomi, all of this is untrue and videos trying to say otherwise are just edited. In their demonstration, the company presents a scratched screen treated with toothpaste. In the end, when removed, there is no discernible change or improvement.

Interestingly, Xiaomi’s advice is actually to avoid dealing with the mobile phone with this type of substance. According to their explanation, toothpaste can indeed remove the oil-resistant layer from the screen. This coating is responsible for isolating the screen from oily substances, and also helps in removing fingerprints.
