Google Fails to Stop Lawsuit Demanding $5 Billion for Spying on Users in Incognito Mode

Back in June, Google found itself facing a lawsuit in a California court, where the tech company was accused of violating US privacy regulations “by intercepting and tracking communications” even when users resort to using incognito mode in Chrome.

The lawsuit accused Google of doing so through various tools, from Google Analytics to mobile device apps:

“Google tracks and collects consumer browsing history, along with other web activity data, regardless of the steps they take to protect their data privacy.”

Now, the court has made its initial decision on the lawsuit: not dismissing it, as Google requested to proceed to trial.

This is significant because the plaintiffs seek to grant it a “class action” status, urging “millions” of Google users to join… and seek compensation of $5 billion.

This lawsuit comes at a time when privacy protection by major companies has increased media coverage. In fact, just two weeks ago, Google announced its intention to end third-party cookie tracking.
