5 Uncommon and Unknown Uses of Internet Browsing Programs

As is usual with any internet browsing programs, their use is limited to discovering websites and conducting various search operations by users, as this is their natural purpose. Here at the Computer World blog, we review hidden tricks within popular browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox that can enhance the browsing experience. However, let me tell you, dear reader, that internet browsers have other different uses unrelated to browsing the internet. Here, I am talking about all browsers, not just the popular ones, and their unique uses that some may not be aware of. That is why we have prepared this article to shed light on 6 of these uses for you to try out.

1- Running Programs Online Directly from the Browser

By using the Cameyo tool, you can actually try out some Windows programs online directly from the internet browser. This tool includes a vast array of popular computer programs that can be run and used without any issues as if you had installed them on your computer. After accessing the website from your browser, all you have to do is select the program you want to try, click on its specific icon, and you will be taken to another page with information about the selected program. There, you will find a “Play” button to click on, and after a short wait, the program’s main interface will be displayed. Here, you can explore the program and its features, and if you wish to download it, the website provides a direct download link by clicking on “Download.”

2- Writing Texts and Saving Them through the Browser

I am not sure if this feature is available in all browsing programs, but I have tried it on Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Torch, and it worked. The feature transforms the browser into a platform for writing, similar to Notepad in Windows. This can be useful if you have some text you want to save or make quick notes. All you have to do is copy and paste the command below into the browser’s address bar and press Enter. A blank page will appear where you can write anything as if you were using the Notepad tool in Windows. To save this text, press Ctrl + S and select the location to save the file. To view it again, drag and drop this file into the browser.

Command: data:text/html, <html contenteditable>

3- Playing Music and Movies from the Browser

If you encounter issues with media player software on your computer or if you do not use any of these programs in the first place, you can temporarily do without them since you have a web browser on your computer. You can easily browse and listen to music files directly from the browser without any difference from the programs that serve this purpose. To do this, open a new tab in the browser, go to the music file, drag and drop it into the new tab in the browser, and it will start playing without any issues.

This feature is not limited to playing songs through the browser but also watching videos. You can watch mp4 format videos from the browser by dragging and dropping the video file into it. It will be played immediately, and you can control the video through the toolbar at the bottom of the page, such as adjusting the volume, pausing, or enabling full-screen mode.

4- Viewing and Reading PDF Files

There are many computer programs that allow you to view PDF files and read their contents, although there are also online tools available on the internet that provide this functionality. However, you can do without specific tools and software and use the internet browser if you only want to read PDF files. Browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Opera allow this. If you use one of them and have a PDF file you want to view, simply drag and drop the file into the browser window and wait for the file to be uploaded directly to the program. You can easily navigate between the PDF pages, zoom in/out, and control the file without any problems.

5- Browsing and Accessing Hard Drive Files from the Browser

Another feature available in some browsers is the ability to browse through Windows folders or everything inside a hard drive partition on your computer. The great thing about this feature is that the browser will display hidden files in the C partition, which may not appear when hidden files are enabled since they are specific to the operating system. You can also open files within the browser by opening a new window in the browser, then typing “file:///C:/” in the address bar, ensuring to change the C symbol to the letter of the partition you want to browse the folders inside.
