3 ways to connect to the internet from your phone through the computer without using a hotspot
In several previous articles, we showed you how you can connect internet to your computer using your phone, either through Wi-Fi even if it does not support it or through your phone data using the hotspot feature, or even by connecting the internet to your computer from your phone via Bluetooth. These are useful methods for connecting internet to your computer, but what if we wanted to do the opposite?! In other words, connecting the internet to the phone through the computer. You can use software to turn your computer or laptop into a wireless router and then start capturing the network from the phone to browse the internet.
This method is not available on most mobile and desktop devices, so you cannot share the internet with other devices. However, this is not impossible. You can still connect to the internet from your phone through your computer using a USB cable. Here, we will show you how to do that.
Now we will start by discussing the ways through which you can share your computer internet with your phone. Note that there are 3 methods: one requires root permissions on your phone, another does not require root, and the third will be through the special OTG cable to connect an Ethernet cable to the phone.
The first method is to use the mobile and free Android Reverse Tethering tool, through which you can share the internet from your computer to your phone via a USB cable. So, you can connect the internet to the phone through the computer using a USB cable. You just need to download the tool file and then extract the compressed file and run the “AndroidTool.exe” file to open the program interface. Here, you will connect the phone to the computer via the USB cable and also activate the USB debugging option from the developer options on your phone. Then, once the phone model appears in the “Select a device” box on the tool, click on the “Connect” button.
After clicking the connect button, a window will appear explaining the steps that the program takes to connect to the phone and will also install the USB Tunnel application, which acts as a link between the phone and the computer for internet sharing. However, for it to work, it will need access to root permissions, so you will see a permission window from SuperUser, as shown in the image above, where you click on Grant to allow the tool to access root permissions and start connecting the internet to your phone through the computer.
Once the setup steps are complete, you can now browse the internet and use applications without activating the phone data or Wi-Fi, as you can utilize the internet connection through your computer. In the Android Reverse Tethering tool, you will notice that it displays upload and download speeds and the consumption of the websites and applications you browse on your phone.
The second method does not require root permissions and will be using the Reverse Tethering app, which also allows you to connect the internet to your Android phone through the computer via a USB cable, but it is not completely free. It gives you a limited time to share the internet, and then it temporarily stops for 20 minutes before resuming. If you find that the app works well for you, you can purchase the paid version to use it without limitations.
Using the app is very easy. You will download the app on your phone, then after launching it, you will connect the phone to the computer via a USB cable and activate the USB Debugging option. Once that is done, you will download the ReverseTethering Server tool on your computer. This tool is important for enabling the phone to connect to the internet through the computer. After running it and its icon appears on the taskbar, go to the app on the phone and press the Connect button. Then you will see the icon allowing the connection by activating the VPN, so press OK.
Now, a notification will appear on Windows informing you that the phone is connected to the ReverseTethering Server tool, and now you can browse websites and open applications using the internet from the computer.
As shown in the image above, I opened the Facebook website on the browser, accessed the Al-Aalam Al-Kombyoter page, and also opened many applications, including YouTube, to play videos. Everything worked smoothly using the USB cable connected to the computer without activating Wi-Fi or phone data.
You can also connect the internet to your mobile without activating Wi-Fi or phone data using an OTG LAN cable, which we discussed in an article about unknown uses of OTG cables that may compel you to buy one. You can purchase this cable and then connect your phone to the computer’s Ethernet cable directly from the router, and then you can browse the internet on your phone through it without any issues. You will notice that this method is faster than connecting via Wi-Fi on the phone.
